Is Culinary School right for you?
Cooking and the art of food preparation is an eminently practical job, and so many people question whether it is appropriate to study the subject formally. In fact, the more information and skills you acquire at culinary school, the better your skill levels are likely to be in the kitchen. You learn how to turn your ideas for new dishes into successful items on your menu. You also learn about the parts of any job in the industry that are not directly to do with producing food - kitchen management, human resource management and financial management.
Culinary school courses can be from one year to four years long, leading to certificates and diplomas, and associate or bachelor degrees. On these courses you will study a whole variety of subjects including culinary skills, kitchen management, restaurant management, food science, food and beverage management, hygiene, information systems, and other related subjects. Culinary school can also be useful in that you will learn about the industry you are about to enter, and may well make contacts with fellow students, professors and other people that can stand you in good stead throughout your career.
And after? Well, prospects are good in the catering industry, with increased leisure and disposable income meaning that people have more money to spend on outside entertainment and food. Career progression can be rapid with good qualifications and talent, and the rewards for the top ten percent of chefs and culinary artists are very good indeed.
